Преклонение перед героями в древности было именно тем, что буквально подразумевает данный термин, и возникло оно почти одновременно с поклонением богам, по отношению к которым герои считались всего на ступеньку ниже. Как и святые Церкви несколько позже, они были смертными, которые своим примером достойным подражания, заслужили обожествление и особое почитание.
Подобное поклонение в несколько изменённом виде существует и по сей день. Если мы больше не возводим алтарей, не воскуряем фимиам и не проливаем самоотверженно кровь в честь наших героев, по крайней мере, мы продолжаем считать их достойными поклонения. Наши стандарты изменились, это верно. Герой в чисто гомеровском смысле, принц-воин, мускулистый сверхчеловек, ловкий и чрезвычайно смелый, больше нас не удовлетворяет. Мы всё ещё требуем отваги и отваги высшей пробы, но физическая удаль перестала быть обязательным условием. В пантеон героев попадают лишь те, кто вдохновляет будущие поколения своими достижениями, созданными традициями и установленными стандартами. Я стремился наглядно показать всё это, вкратце представив биографии шести выдающихся людей, каждый из которых обогатил своей краткой жизнью страну, в которой родился, или весь мир в целом и кто в той или иной степени стремился больше к обогащению своих соратников, нежели самого себя.
Сферы деятельности, из которых взяты эти биографии, так же различны, как и степень героизма их обладателей, начиная с величия силы самоуверенного Ричарда Львиное Сердце, который едва ли соответствует принятым требованиям, и заканчивая величием духа самоотверженного святого Франциска Ассизского.
Так как данные описания главным образом направлены на то, чтобы подчеркнуть героические черты каждого из выбранных людей, они не являются исчерпывающими биографиями. Тем не менее, в каждом случае согласно выбранной цели исследование проведено весьма тщательно и полно.

HERO-WORSHIP with the ancients was precisely what the term implies, and we find it almost coeval with the worship of the gods, to whom heroes were regarded as being only one degree inferior. Like the saints of the Church in a later age, they were mortals who, by lives of more than ordinary human worth, had earned a semi-deification and a particular cult. With modifications this cult endures. If we no longer raise altars, burn incense and shed sacrificial blood in honour of our heroes, at least we continue to hold them as objects of veneration. It is true that our standards have changed. The hero in the purely Homeric sense, the warrior-prince, the superman in thews, craft and animal courage, no longer satisfies us. Courage we still demand, and courage of a high order; but physical prowess has ceased to be a necessary attribute. This means that in our estimation of heroism we have come not merely to rate the spirit above the flesh, but to regard the flesh as negligible. The most notable difference, however, between the ancient and the modern conceptions lies in the fact that however conspicuous may be a man's prowess, skill or achievement in whatsoever field, and however fine his courage, we do not bestow upon him to-day the hero's laurels unless we discern in him some quality of self-sacrifice, and unless the service in which he achieves distinction is the service of some ideal. It may not be necessary that he should pursue it without any hope of gain to himself, but the less we perceive him to be straining after personal advantages in the course of lofty endeavour on behalf of a cause, the more highly do we rate his heroism. It was part of the ancient view that, like the cult of the gods, the cult of heroes should exercise an influence on human affairs. That is still a necessity in the modern view. Only those are to be enshrined in the pantheon of heroes whose achievements influence posterity by the inspiration they supply, the traditions they have created, or the standards they have set. I have sought to illustrate these points by presenting in succinct form the biographies of six personages, each of whom has left either the world or the nation that produced him the richer for his brief passage through it, and whose life held, in greater or less degree, the aim of so enriching his fellows rather than himself. The degrees of heroism in the subjects of these sketches are as different as the spheres of activity from which they are gathered, ranging, as they do, from the full-blooded majesty of the self-asserting Coeur-de-Lion, who barely comes within the prescribed requirements, to the spiritual majesty of the self-denying Saint Francis of Assisi. Inasmuch as these sketches are mainly concerned with those transactions which bring into relief the heroic attributes of each of the subjects chosen, they are not offered as complete biographies. Nevertheless, in each instance, the survey has been made as comprehensive as is consistent with the avowed aim.
